Alberta Tuition Increase

Future students of Albertan post-secondary institutions should be prepared to shell out more tuition money.  The cost for 25 programs is rising, including four in Lethbridge.

The Faculty of Management course at the U of L, and the Child Youth Care, Bachelor of Nursing and Practical Nursing programs at the College are included in the provincial market modifiers.  The increases take effect a the college in 2016/2017 and the university in 2017/2018.  College officials are defending the rate hikes, saying they are not an outrageous sum.

Stuart Cullum, Vice-President Academic at Lethbridge College, said “We really are just getting our tuition rates up to the standard across the system, so our students now will be paying similar rates to what their counterparts are paying across the province.”

Michael Doughty, Acting President of the LCSA said, “The announcement earlier this week took us by surprise. We were assured that tuition market modifiers would not go ahead without further consulation, and that consultation never happened.”

“The additional revenue would go right back to benefit the students taking the affected programs,” Cullum added.

About eight percent of post-secondary students in Alberta will be affected by this increase, and the institutions will see an revenue bump of approximately 21 million dollars.
