Montrealer facing terrorism-related charges denied bail

MONTREAL — Jeffrey Labelle, the 21-year-old man arrested for making alleged threats against Montreal police stations, was denied bail on Tuesday.

He was facing charges related to terrorist activity; specifically, that he committed acts that could reasonably construed as terrorist acts between Sept. 1 and Dec. 19, 2014.

During their investigation, authorities said they found a map with locations of police stations marked on it in the man’s apartment.

In court on Tuesday, the judge described Labelle as a lone wolf, saying he posed a threat to both himself and society.

Labelle was also ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Although authorities suggested family members had reached out to police after becoming concerned about Labelle’s growing radicalization, it was confirmed on Tuesday that it was a social worker.

The social worker alerted police after Labelle’s mother told her that her son had been talking about carrying out a grandiose act that she would be proud of, a disclosure that came about after he had watched footage of ISIS.

Labelle converted to Islam two years ago.

Weapons belonging to Labelle were also found in his home and in a hiding place nearby.

Labelle’s attorney said that it was important to remember that the arrest was a preventative one, and it cannot be proven that the young man was planning terrorist acts.
