Downed power line disrupts CTrain service on south LRT

CALGARY – Some CTrain passengers faced lengthy delays Monday morning after a downed power line forced the closure of the south LRT between Victoria Park and Chinook stations.

All service was restored around 8 p.m. on Monday night.

Transit officials said the wires of a passing train somehow became tangled in an overhead line at the 39th Street station at about 7:30 a.m.

“I was sitting on the train and all of the sudden I heard this very loud noise,” said passenger Zachariah Edwards. “All of a sudden we just lost power to the train.”

One passenger said it took up to 90 minutes for shuttle buses to arrive. The train was later moved.

The power outage came as an unwelcome delay for Calgarians heading to Chinook Centre or downtown to do some last-minute Christmas shopping.

Enmax crews spent most of the day repairing the line.
