KELOWNA–When Richard Manky got a call at work that the front window of his house was broken, he dashed home to investigate.
“I opened the door and straight ahead of me, I saw a guy bagging up my stuff.”
Elizabeth Sheyev had a similar experience last week. She came home from a short shift at work to find
her house turned upside down.
“They got everything but my heart,” Sheyev says, “three generations of jewlery, anything I had saved.”
Several neighbors in Sheyev’s complex near downtown Kelowna were targeted, and a BMW was also stolen.
But in those cases, no one came home while the robber was in their house like Manky did.
“Without thinking, I just charged at him. I nearly caught him at patio door because he had to open it.”
Manky took chase, finally tackling the would be thief to the ground and holding him.
“So I had to hold him down while I was on the phone with 911. He was biting me, and the woman at 911 said let him go the K9 unit is almost there,” said Manky.
He followed the man around, and kept an eye on him until the police arrived.
That’s when police found a stolen BMW with a bunch of stolen items in it.
Richard Manky says he believes the cases are related…and he’s pretty proud of his part in taking the
suspect down.
“I’ve always had this desire to be a vigilante,” Manky admits, “and I kind of fulfilled that need a little bit.”
