Hospice Greater Moncton working to recoup losses after being victim of robbery

Brion Robinson/ Global News

MONCTON – Staff at Hospice Greater Moncton’s shoppe boutique are working to recoup the loss from a brazen break and enter overnight Friday.

Executive Director Joanne Adair says someone smashed in the front door of their store sometime between 8:00 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Whoever broke in made off with a safe full of donations. It’s believed about $2,000 was inside the safe along with some uncashed cheques.

The money would have gone towards hospice services in the Greater Moncton area.

“[I am] enraged, outraged, flabbergasted. I can’t believe somebody would steal money that was going to help people while they’re dying,” Adair said.

But she said the community support has been amazing.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I had a new donor come in she called and she said, ‘I want to come in and make this donation,'” she said.

“It was on her Visa but it was a $1,000 donation and it’s incredible, just incredible for us.

“I have had a call from Rossano’s restaurant on Main Street who want to hold a fundraiser for us to cover off some of that money we’ve lost.”

RCMP are continuing to investigate the theft.
