SGI launches lawsuit against city over sunken car

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has launched a lawsuit against the City of Saskatoon over an incident last December, when a woman’s vehicle launched off the Circle Drive North Bridge and landed on the icy river below.

The vehicle’s driver, 23-year-old Breanna Pegg, escaped from the vehicle moments before it broke through the ice and sank. She suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police collision analysts determined last year that Pegg lost control due to icy road conditions, and a build-up of ice and snow against the guardrail was partly to blame for her car falling off the bridge.

According to SGI, lawsuits are common after an incident in which a municipality’s actions could be a contributing factor in a crash.

SGI hopes to recover nearly $20,000 that it paid to Pegg, which covered the value of the vehicle, the costs of a dive team that searched for the car and the retrieval of the car in July.
