HALIFAX – A man and young boy are recovering after an ATV they were both on flipped into a river.

The incident happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the Salt Marsh Trail near Shearwater.

Halifax Fire Captain Yves Tousignant said the 21-year-old man and his six-year-old male cousin, both from Eastern Passage, were riding on the ATV and trying to cross a river when the ATV hit a boulder.

“The ATV flipped and him and his cousin fell into the water and got carried away,” Tousignant said. “From what I understand, they had a really hard time getting out due to all the rain we had in the past week.”

Tousignant said the pair were carried between 25 to 50 feet by the current before they managed to get themselves out of the water.

Resident Dan LeFort was taking an evening stroll on the trail when he heard a call for help.

LeFort said the 21-year-old man came out on the trail yelling for assistance.

“When I reached them, the little boy was off to the side and of course he was cold and crying,” he said. “[The little boy] looked very uncomfortable. They lost their boots, socks, their jackets were off because they were cold. I gave the little boy my coat.”

LeFort called 911 and helped carry the young boy about two kilometres out to the parking lot where paramedics were waiting.

Tousignant advises residents to stay away from swift moving waters.

“It’s abnormally high this time of year so just use a little bit of common sense,” he said.
