Rebel with a Claus: Bus driver in Santa suit returns to the road

Kirk Rockwell has been a bus driver for 20 years, and every December, he tries to spread a little bit of holiday cheer by driving in a Santa costume.

Last year, he was told not to wear his Santa suit, which sparked a major backlash and forced Translink to backtrack.

“I really have to thank the public, and the riders, who just felt that the company needed to be a bit more leinent, especially during the holidays,” says Rockwell.

This year, operators are allowed to wear festive attire, but only from December 15 to December 25.

Rockwell is taking some time off this year, and will only don his Santa suit three times this year.

He hopes he will be able to convince Translink to be more flexible next year and allow him to wear the suit all month.

Rockwell says almost all of his passengers have a positive reaction to his attire.

“I get all types of reactions – most of them are in awe, and some of them are quite funny. The children love it, the elderly people love it, and the riders say it’s a great way to start their day,” he says.

“I just love Christmas, and I like to make people feel good. If I can make someone feel good, and I hope it has a ripple effect of good cheer for everyone,” says Rockwell.
