Saskatoon says goodbye to long-serving mayor

SASKATOON – Uncomplicated, genuine, family-orientated and just a ‘nice guy’ are all terms used as hundreds mourned the loss of former Saskatoon mayor Cliff Wright. A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. John’s Cathedral.

Appearing strong and stoic, Wright’s wife lead the way in the church followed by their four children and spouses along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A two-part eulogy gave mention to Wright’s long list of accomplishments including the creation of the Meewasin Valley Authority, the SaskTel Centre and a large land settlement while serving as the treaty land entitlement commissioner.

“One of the things that are unique is that he was appointed by premiers of the NDP, Conservative and Liberal governments. All levels of government, all political stripes saw Cliff as a leader,” said eulogist Doug Hodson.

Known for his roles as a city council alderman from 1967-76, mayor from 1976-88 and the man formerly behind Wright Construction – the memorial service also commemorated his personal life and more than six decades of marriage to Betty.

Dignitaries including Roy Romanow, Ralph Goodale, and past and present mayors all bid Wright adieu. The service was not a tearful one but rather a reflection of a life well lived.

“Cliff was a joy to work with. He was a visionary, he worked hard, he had a mind like a trap, and he never forgot anything,” said former city manager Phil Richards.
