Alternate route for Hwy 97 opens in West Kelowna

WEST KELOWNA – There may be a little less traffic on a section of Highway 97 in West Kelowna in the future, thanks to a new road that officially opened on Wednesday. The new Sneena Road stretches from the west end of the Bennett Bridge to Boucherie Road, so local motorists don’t have to use the frequently congested Highway 97. While some drivers complain it’s seems like the area has been a construction zone forever, Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie says the Sneena Road project will provide many benefits.

“I believe it will relieve some of the congestion, even if we have say 400 cars per day on the new route, that’s still cars off of Highway 97,” says Chief Louie. “To have an alternate means to get around especially for emergency purposes, it’s ideal.”

The almost 10 million dollar project was funded by the province, but all aspects from construction to completion was managed by the West Bank First Nation.
