Mall men spend Christmas shopping season sitting on the sidelines

WINNIPEG — It’s the frantic final push to find that perfect present, but in the midst of the mayhem sit more than a few men.

“I am a bench person,” said Roger Yahmission, who waited for his wife at Polo Park Shopping Centre Wednesday.

He wasn’t alone. A quick glance around the mall and it is easy to see some men would rather stake claim to a bench than set foot in a store.

“It’s better if he sits out for a little bit,” said Laraine Shepherd, adding her husband isn’t the best person to go shopping with. “He walks in circles.”

Her husband doesn’t mind sitting on the bench. “I like to see all the people,” said Noel Shepherd.

Rudy Renaud prefers to do the Jumble in the newspaper while waiting for his wife, who was shopping in The Bay.

“She is spending all of my money,” he joked, admitting he doesn’t really know what she was shopping for.

There are many men on the sidelines, but some said it is because they are efficient.

“We men know what we want,” said Maurice Mazerolle, who was eating popcorn while sitting on a bench to pass the time until his wife found what she was looking for. “We are here less than an hour and we are gone.”
