WINNIPEG – Defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry has been fired by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after just a single season with the club.
“Obviously a decision like this is a very difficult one to make on many levels,” said Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea. “The reality of the situation is such that we simply weren’t good enough on the defensive side of the football this season, and felt that we needed to go in a different direction in this regard.”
The Bombers were dead last among the nine CFL teams this past year in points (481) and rushing yards (135.9) allowed per game. The team’s defence also gave up a third-worst 360.9 total yards per game. Winnipeg missed the playoffs for the third straight season after finishing with a 7-11 record.
Etcheverry’s replacement has not been named. O’Shea said the switch could bring more changes to the Bombers defensive unit.
“The defensive staff are not under contract for next season,” said O’Shea. “However the incoming defensive co-ordinator will have the opportunity to move forward with any of these coaches if he sees fit.”
