Surrey city council is giving the green light to a plan that will put more police officers on the streets.
Council approved funding for an additional 100 officers, boosting the numbers from 703 to 803. It’s hoped the additional boots on the street will increase police engagement in the community and one-on-one contact with the public.
“These police officers will be in positions where they are highly visible, they are able to quickly respond to calls for service to deal with any emerging issue in our city,” says Surrey RCMP Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy in a statement. “The net effect of that will be that there will more proactive policing done and a reduction in crime.”
“It’s a clear statement that city council and Surrey RCMP and the citizens are in complete alignment, that public safety is a No. 1 concern,” adds Fordy.
Twenty-five municipal support staff will also be added.
Fordy cautions that changes won’t come overnight.
“While we are all eager for these new resources to arrive, the process to increase staffing does take some time.”
