WINNIPEG – Winnipeg Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters is still working into the holiday season as the football club announced a contract extension for Canadian defensive back Derek Jones. No contract details were released.

The 22-year-old just completed his rookie season with the Bombers appearing in all 18 games, making six defensive tackles and registering another six tackles on special teams. Jones, who’s 6′ 1″ and 190 pounds last played at Simon Fraser University.

“Derek is bright young man, who played solid for us on special teams, and also saw spot duty on defence,” said Walters in a media release. “He’s a guy we feel is maybe underrated at this point, but after only one season in our league, we wanted to make sure he remained a Blue Bomber moving forward. This is a player who will just continue to get better and that’s what we look forward to watching.”
