Alcohol-related illnesses on the rise in B.C.

VANCOUVER – A researcher in Victoria is warning about a sharp increase in alcohol-related illnesses.

A doctor at the Centre for Addictions Research B.C. says if current trends continue, more people will be hospitalized for alcohol-related conditions than for tobacco use by the year 2020. Between 2002 and 2012, the rate of hospital admission for alcohol increased more than 21 per cent.

That spike came as tobacco-related admissions dropped by 15 per cent. The doctor says there are five times as many hospitalizations for alcohol in B.C. as there are for all illicit drugs combined.
