Debit and credit card fare purchases on the way for TTC users

TORONTO – TTC users will finally be able to make fare purchases with their debit and credit cards.

The long-awaited payment option will be available to riders beginning Jan. 1 but will only be permitted on purchases of 10 or more tokens and tickets.

“We need to make riding the Rocket and riding the transit system easier,” Toronto Mayor John Tory said during the announcement at Victoria Park Station Tuesday morning.

TTC CEO Andy Byford, who was also in attendance alongside TTC Chair Josh Colle, told reporters he hopes to install a “wave and pay” system across the network by next summer.

“We want to get rid of tokens and tickets and get behind Presto,” said Byford.

The TTC hopes to have the technology installed on all streetcars, buses and subways by 2017.

“With the Pan Am Games coming, we want Presto up and running as soon as possible,” Colle said.
