CALGARY – A power outage in the city’s south caused traffic troubles for drivers heading to work on Monday.

The outage happened just after 7 a.m., impacting over 600 customers in the areas of Parkhill, Manchester Industrial area, Highfield and Erlton.

Calgary Fire Chief Paul Leblanc says the outage was caused by an excavator which struck an ENMAX line.

“I believe it was an accidental issue where he backed into one of the power lines, brought the power line down on top of his excavator,” he said.

The man operating the excavator had to stay inside the vehicle until EXMAX crews were able to determine it was safe for him to leave.
