WINNIPEG – Temperatures almost reached double digits in parts of Manitoba over the weekend but a cooling trend brought freezing rain overnight and ice-covered roads Monday morning.

The warm spell brought unusually warm mid-December weather to Manitoba, with McCreary, Man., hitting 9.3 C on Friday. Wasagaming was Manitoba’s hot spot on Saturday with a high of 6.7 C and Emerson was warmest Sunday with a high of 2.2 C. Back on Thursday, Swan River hit a high of 8.2 C.

The warm weather created some trouble for those hoping to embrace winter activities on the weekend, with The Forks having to shut down all of its ice rinks. Staff said they hoped to reopen the rinks soon. A Skate with Santa event at the Wildwood Park Community Centre became Sled with Santa as the unseasonably warm weather closed rinks there, as well.
