Uniquely Manitoba: Tony Chestnut focuses on flair and function

WINNIPEG — Jill Sawatzy, the designer and textile artist behind local women’s clothing line Tony Chestnut, believes clothing should be functional first and beautiful second.

“In my mind, if you can wear clothing that’s functional — whether you have two kids running around you or whatever — but also look great and feel great, that’s what I strive for,” says Sawatzky.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Sawatzky is a mother of two, and over the years, she’s realized the importance of creating clothing for the “busy woman.”

“Definitely things need to be more functional when you know what it’s like to be a mom,” she says.

Sawatzky’s designs have simple silhouettes, and she enjoys making pieces with a little more volume and fabric so each woman can make it her own.

“I do a lot of hand rendering of my fabric as well, so I either hand paint it or hand dye it,” she says.

Clothing can be purchased exclusively online at tonychestnut.ca, or at her two trunk sales each year.
