A six-year-old from Vancouver isn’t crying about Brett Lawrie’s departure from the Toronto Blue Jays anymore.

Days after her tears set off the internet, Amelia Lyttle got to meet her favourite baseball player in a surprise meeting in Langley.

“It was pretty cool. He was really nice,” said Lyttle, who also received a signed jersey and Blue Jays bear from the former Toronto infielder.

Lawrie, who was born and raised in Langley, played four seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays before he was traded to the Oakland Athletics along with three other players for all-star Josh Donaldson.

Video of Lyttle crying and not knowing whether she could continue to support Lawrie was posted on the internet by her parents and quickly went viral.

“When we posted it initially, our hope was maybe Brett Lawrie would see it and reach out,” says her father Alex. “You always think in the back of your mind there’s a chance, but you never think it will happen.”

As luck would have it, Lawrie was about to head back home to Langley for the holidays when he saw it, and arranged for the surprise meeting when he realized Amelia lived in Vancouver.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Her parents took Amelia out of school and told her she had a doctor’s appointment. They drove to Langley, and Lawrie came up to the family while they were eating in a Boston Pizza.

Lawrie asked Amelia to keep cheering for him and gave her a signed jersey and Blue Jays teddy bear. The meeting initially left Amelia speechless, but she’s been gushing ever since.

“When she gets extremely excited, she tends to hold it in. She was just shell-shocked,” says her father.

As for Amelia, she’s learned the difference between supporting a player and supporting a team at a very young age.

“I’m still going to be cheering for the Blue Jays, but I still will be cheering for Brett,” she says.

“But I won’t be cheering for all of Oakland, just for Brett.”
