Homeowners assessing damage after heavy rainfall

HALIFAX – Torrential, record-breaking rainfall this week in the Maritimes caused widespread flooding and four days later, the damage and its steep price tag are becoming clear.

In Waverley, N.S., flooded roads made it difficult for residents to get around. The local fire department filled with water this weekend, forcing staff to evacuate and move firetrucks elsewhere.

Officials expect to begin tallying up the damage and start the clean-up in the coming week.

Union Street in Bedford was one of the hardest hit areas. The street had severe flooding, causing a headache for homeowners.

“It’s probably close to $30,000 worth of stuff, not counting the $40,000 they estimate in damage to the house,” said Marguerite Dodge.

Dodge’s home was completely surrounded by water for two days, forcing her and her family to stay in a hotel. Her daughter and grandchildren, who live in the basement, lost the most.

“All the furniture, the couch, the chairs, kids games, their Wii, all their clothes are gone. And mementos they had, personal items, all gone,” Dodge said.

She said Christmas presents were also ruined.

Insurance doesn’t cover the flood, only the sewer back-up, so the cost to repair her home is coming from her own pocket.

“We just have to make the best of it, I guess, and see what happens.”

Family and friends are planning to set up a crowd-funding campaign to help Dodge and her family get back on their feet.
