Operation Nez Rouge drive-home service in full swing

WATCH: Volunteers at Operation Nez Rouge worked around the clock on Saturday night, giving over 5000 rides across the province. Ines de la Cuetara has more.

MONTREAL – The 31st annual Operation Nez Rouge is in full swing as their busiest weekends of the season kick-off.

The program provides drive-home service for people who may have had a bit too much to drink at office holiday parties.

Users simply call in for volunteers to come pick them up and get driven safely back to their homes.

There is no charge for the service but donations are encouraged.

Nez Rouge aims to prevent drunk-driving and began as small operation in Quebec City  in 1984.

Nearly 56,000 people volunteer for the program every year across Canada, providing an estimated 80,000 rides.

In Quebec, more than 5,000 rides were given on Saturday alone.

Mayor Denis Coderre dropped by the Montreal headquarters to lend his support Saturday evening.

“I’m amazed with all that solidarity and I think it was normal for the Mayor of Montreal to show up and thank them,” Coderre said.

Montrealers who need a ride can simply call 514-256-2510 or  1-866-DESJARDINS from anywhere in Quebec.
