Reginans ring in Ugly Christmas Sweater Day

REGINA – December 12 marks National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, where you’re encouraged to sport a pullover your grandmother likely knit decades ago – all in the name of spreading holiday cheer.

So what makes the best, or in this case, the worst holiday sweater?

“Something really bright,” said Regina resident Tiana Garcia. She was shopping for a vintage sweater to wear to a holiday Christmas party. “It should be fun. “It’s a competition kind of.”

Fashion expert Karey Kapell explained that ugly sweaters have become so popular in recent years, they’re considered the ‘new black’ over the holidays.

“It’s totally the trend right now. People are wearing them to the office, they are throwing blazers over them,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun and actually, a lot of designers are picking up on that and creating a Christmas sweater in their collections.”

Even the National Hockey League has jumped on the bandwagon with a line of festive jerseys in all 30 team colours.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The two Jersey City locations in Regina said they sold out of the hockey sweaters right away and were forced to order more.

Marc Chase, production manager at Value Village, said if you haven’t picked up your perfect ugly sweater already, you may be out of luck.

“It is very tough right now. You’re pretty much making your home at this point, we don’t really have any readymade ones left,” he added.

Kapell believes that a little creativity can go along way when creating the perfect ugly sweater.

“Jazz it up yourself by adding Christmas decorations, pinning things on it, so you don’t have to go pay a lot of money for the Christmas sweater,” she said.

If nothing else you could just go old school and take a little inspiriting from Clark Griswold from the 1989 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
