CALGARY- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is investigating after a traveller at the Calgary International Airport was found to be carrying over $80,000 in undeclared U.S. and Canadian bills.
On Friday, the CBSA announced it seized $84,439 in currency from the traveller on December 8. They say CBSA officers were conducting routine background checks on travellers. When a man said he was travelling with $2,000, officers probed further and discovered more than $80,000 in the man’s belongings.
The CBSA says the man was unable to show he had obtained the money legitimately and the cash was seized as suspected proceeds of crime with no terms of release.
Travellers carrying $10,000 or more in cash or other assets are required to report it to CBSA officers.
Monday’s confiscation is the CBSA’s largest seizure of suspected proceeds of crime by the CBSA in Alberta this year.
