Manitobans warmed by more than holiday spirit

WINNIPEG — It’s finally here: the mid-December “heat wave.”

The strong southwesterly flow of air coming into our province has helped usher in some unseasonably warm weather. Western Manitoba was the warmest area of the province, breaking some records Wednesday. The most notable is was The Pas at 5.4 C, breaking the previous one from 2006. Records in that area began in 1943. Here are some of warmest places in the province. These areas experienced temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal.

In the forecast, while some numbers have changed slightly and the general outlook now involves mixed to overcast skies, there’s no mistaking these abnormal temperatures. Once again today, the warmest region will be along the western border, with temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal. Moving towards the weekend, temperatures are still likely to get close to or above the freezing mark even up in northern Manitoba. The question is how much warmer we will be. The low-level moisture is making forecasting a challenge for meteorologists but as it stands, there is reason for hope that even Winnipeg could break a record that’s been in place for over a century.
