Blood donors needed in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE- Peter Delauw has donated blood 28 times.  He says it’s a simple way to give back to his community.

“I just had the understanding that sick and injured people could have the need for blood, and I’m able and willing to do it.  Family members have also donated in the past, so that’s where I first got the idea.”

As some are set to celebrate the holiday season with parties, dinners and family gatherings, others aren’t so fortunate.  Belinda Tomiyama with Canadian Blood Services says the need for donations never stops, not even during the holidays.

“Here in Lethbridge, between December 23rd and December 31st, the clinic is only open for five days and we still need a 120 more people to book appointments.”

Whether you are a first-timer or a regular, Canadian Blood Services is asking any eligible donor to embrace the spirit of giving.

“We are asking everyone to just wrap it up red. It’s that present of coming in and giving them that red blood, and that present that patients need,” adds Tomiyama.

For those who feel too rushed, or don’t want to give up a day with family, Tomiyama also suggests making it a family affair.

“We are open on Boxing Day, we are open on the 24th, we are open on the 31st.  We understand people are getting ready for those important days, but patients are constantly needing transfusions.”
