Teen makes greeting cards with a purpose

Katie Philip has spent the past seven years making handmade greeting cards and she’s raised almost $12,000 along the way for charity. But it’s how Philip makes her cards that’s remarkable because the 18-year-old has cerebral palsy.

Philip and her mother, who would guide her hand, started stamping together in 2007. And about four years ago, CanAssist at the University of Victoria developed a machine to allow Philip to stamp on her own. The device was controlled with her head movement.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Over the years, the Victoria resident has raised almost $12,000 through the sale of her handmade cards, which have been sent around the world. The teen has donated all of the money she raised to various community groups and schools that have supported her to this point.

Now, she will be taking control of her future and start putting the money she makes from the cards into an account to help her with her disabilities as she gets older.
