WINNIPEG – Kristy Brisco describes the scene at her home on Thursday morning as a nightmare.
“To have to hear the words fire, and jump, and wrap your babies in a blanket. … It was literally one of my worst nightmares,” said Brisco.
Brisco and her family had to scramble for safety while their home on Pritchard Avenue was completely destroyed by a fire. The cause is still under investigation.
All nine people in the duplex escaped.
“I’m so grateful that my family is okay,” said a tearful Brisco. “I couldn’t do anything without my husband or my kids.”
The family lost nearly all of their belongings. They didn’t have insurance. It was still on the “to-do” list after moving in just two months ago.
Brisco is the most broken up about losing her family photos; the mother’s passion is photography.
“They’re all gone, all water and smoke damaged,” said Brisco. “All my baby pictures and all the pictures of my parents.”
Brisco and her fiance, Jayson Donegan, along with their twin boys are currently staying with friends.
“The outreach from the community has been unbelievable,” said Donegan. “We can’t thank them enough. It’s so heart warming.”
Family friends have started a Go Fund Me page to help the family get back on their feet. Donations can be made here.
