Children use sign language to communicate with Santa

WINNIPEG – Holiday spirit filled The Forks Sunday as children with hearing impairments had a chance to communicate with Santa Claus.

“It’s nice to see the magic in the children,” said one of Santa’s elves. “When they see Santa Claus you can see it in their eyes how happy they are.”

Families met with jolly Old Saint Nick all afternoon, taking pictures of their children who used American sign language to let him know what was on their Christmas wish list.

“They’ve never seen a deaf Santa before,” said Santa. “A deaf child will come and see that I’m the same as they are.”

The experience is put on by the Equality Communication Centre of Excellence and Reaching E-quality Employment Services.

Santa will be back at The Forks again on Dec. 13 and 19.
