VANCOUVER – A Vancouver company that recruited an American teacher to work in Abu Dhabi has now set up a fund in her memory.

Ibolya Ryan was stabbed to death in a public restroom at an Abu Dhabi mall, a crime which has rocked the usually peaceful country. Police say she was stabbed to death by the attacker who was wearing the full black veil at the time.

Footprints Recruiting, based in Vancouver, said in a statement “we await the results of the ongoing police investigation before making conclusions about why this senseless tragedy occurred. We are confident that the UAE in general and Abu Dhabi in particular remains a safe environment in which to live and work.”

A female suspect in Ryan’s death has been arrested. It was also revealed the attacker planted a bomb outside the home of another American.

Ryan leaves behind 11-year-old twins who are being held in protective custody until their father arrives in the United Arab Emirates.
