WATCH: Horned owl goes for an icy swim in Lake Michigan

You’ve heard of fish walking – but I doubt you’ve ever seen an owl go for a swim.

But that was exactly what Chicago-area photographer Steve Spitzer captured on film this past Tuesday at Chicago’s Loyola Park Beach.

According to Spitzer, the owl was forced into the lake after it was attacked by two Peregrine Falcons.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

In an interview with WGN-TV News in Chicago, he said he first grabbed his camera after noticing something in the lake. Another bird watcher who happened to be there identified it as a Great Horned Owl.

Spitzer said he didn’t manage to capture any of the aerial battle that preceded the impromptu swim, as he and other onlookers were trying to scare the two falcons off.

He said that bird rescue was called to the scene, but the owl flew off of its own accord before they arrived.
