A green transportation project that was brought to a halt in Whistler a year ago could be re-purposed or sold off by BC Transit.

In December of last year, it was announced Whistler was getting rid of its hydrogen buses and replacing them with diesel buses.

The resort unveiled 20 hydrogen buses with great fanfare during the lead-up to the 2010 Olympic Games.

The buses are powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce no emissions other than water.

But now Global News has learned BC Transit is considering selling them off.

In an email, BC Transit told Global News it is exploring various options, including re-powering or re-purposing the buses.

An initial Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) was posted on BC Bid from June 12 to July 4, 2014 to determine if there were any potential buyers in the international marketplace. A second Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) was posted on BC Bid from August 14 to September 4, 2014 to explore interest for ‘repowering’ the 20 decommissioned buses with an alternative fuel source. The information gathered from these REOIs determined there is a sufficient market interest for BC Transit to prepare and issue a Request for Offers to Purchase (RFOP) for up to 20 of the buses.

BC Transit has not indicated a suggested purchase price nor is BC Transit committed to selling the buses after reviewing any offers, according to the statement.

The Request for Offers to Purchase (RFOP) closes on Dec. 19.
