UPDATE: High-risk offender pleads guilty to sexual assault of teen girl

UPDATE: John Sebela has pled guilty to sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl on a city bus in November of last year. Sebela is well known to police as a prolific offender and is currently listed on the High Risk Offender’s program. He has been in custody since his arrest. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 25.

A 49-year-old high-risk offender has been arrested and charged for the sexual assault of a teenage girl.

On Nov. 24 at about 6 p.m., a 16-year-old Coquitlam student was waiting for a bus at the Lougheed Town Centre when she was approached by an older man. The man touched her while making inappropriate comments and when the teen got on the bus, the man followed. He continued to make inappropriate comments and assaulted her sexually before getting off the bus.

The Transit Police investigated the incident and arrested a man on Nov. 27. John Walter Sebela was charged with one count of sexual assault and remanded in custody until Dec. 10, pending a psychiatric assessment.

Due to Sebela being very well-known to police as a prolific offender, the Transit Police have requested he be kept in custody until his next court appearance.

The teen victim is getting support from family, friends and victim assistance.
