SASKATOON – It was minus 32.4 degrees Celsius Sunday morning in Saskatoon and with the wind chill, it made it feel more like minus 44. It was cold but not record breaking

The bone-chilling temperature in the city was a far cry from the record low of minus 39.4 set in 1893. Other parts of Saskatchewan did break records in the morning including Estevan, which dipped down to minus 28.5, breaking a record dating back to 1955. Mankota also broke an old record from 1985 when they dropped to minus 32.5.

An arctic high pressure system that moved into the province combined with moderate winds made it feel over a dozen degrees colder Sunday morning. Environment Canada issued its first ever cold weather warnings for Saskatchewan this weekend. The extreme cold weather warning replaced what was formally called a wind chill warning.

Coronach dipped to minus 30.6 Monday morning, breaking their old record of minus 26 from 1985. Weyburn fell to minus 30.4, breaking a record from 1975. Other parts of the south that made history setting low temperature records Monday include Mankota, Rockglen and Lucky Lake.

Monday morning brought a reprieve as a southerly flow started to move in with temperatures climbing out of the minus 20s and some of the warmest wind chill values seen in over four days as they climbed into the mid-minus twenties by midday. The first week of December is expected to see relatively warmer temperatures in the forecast.
