Recent cold snap leads to near-record energy use: BC Hydro

BC Hydro says they expect near-record levels of energy use across the province this evening, part of a trend that has seen a spike in power use due to a recent cold snap.

The electric utility says that demand peaked at 9,346 megawatts on Sunday evening between 5 and 6 p.m., 1,550 megawatts more than peak demand the previous Sunday.

Energy demands may remain high with more cold weather on the way. They expect a peak of about 10,100 megawatts tonight, close to the all-time record of 10,113 megawatts set on Nov. 29, 2006.

BC Hydro say two new generating units at the Mica Generating Station in southeastern B.C. are being installed. They also offer a few tips to reduce energy use over the winter months. They recommend washing clothes in cold water; turning off your dishwasher’s “heat dry” function; and using a programmable thermostat to heat your house only when you’re home.
