TORONTO – The unofficial start to the holiday shopping season was marred by violence across the pond as Black Friday deal-hunters stormed stores in several cities in the United Kingdom.

Fights broke out in several stores as people wrestled to get their hands on big screen TVs, video games, and even lingerie.

The annual shopping tradition occurs the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., and has become popular north of the border — and more recently — in the U.K.

Greater Manchester Police said several people were arrested and injuries were reported as police were forced to close some stores to prevent more chaos.

There were problems in many parts of Britain, including Wales and Scotland.
