WATCH: ‘I seriously did cry all night’: Vernon woman hoping to warn others of pet scam

VERNON – First she lost her cat and then she lost more than $200 to scammers when she tried to find a new pet online. Sarah Logan is speaking out hoping other would-be pet owners can learn from her painful experience. Earlier this month she posted an ad on a online classified site looking for a new dog.

“We had just lost our family pet so I just was excited at the opportunity,” says Logan. “Immediately my phone started ringing with texts, ‘Are you looking for a cocker spaniel?’”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Those texts were offering her family a cocker spaniel in Cranbrook. The dog was free, but they would have to pay $250 to a pet delivery agency. They got an email with detailed instructions on how and where they could transfer the $250. They sent the money, but didn’t like what happened next.

“They sent back another email saying now you need to send $690 for insurance of your pet. That is when I absolutely unequivocally knew that I had been scammed,” says Logan.

Now she has some advice for others.

“I did my due diligence a little bit too late in this case,” says Logan. “I did it after I sent $250. Do it before. Never let a single cent leave your hand until you have proof you are getting something in return.”

Logan is still planning to get a dog but says this time it may take a little longer because she’ll be doing her due diligence.
