15,000 more daycare spots announced for Quebec

The Quebec government announced funding for 15,000 new daycare spaces in an attempt to shorten wait times.

Some parents have waited a year and a half to 3 years to find subsidized daycare. 65% of the new spots will be created in larger daycares referred to as Centres de la petite enfance (CPEs) and 35% will go to private subsidized daycares, Family Minister Yolande James said.

The spaces will be spread across the province, with most going to the Montérégie region. Montreal gets almost 2,000 spots. There will be just under 1,400 in the Laurentians and more than 300 in Laval

Daycares have until February to put in their bid for new spaces. James hopes to start announcing some of the new spots as early as next spring, but James says it could take up to 5 years for all the spaces to open up.
