Senior hit by bus suffers life-threatening injuries

CALGARY – A senior was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after being struck by a bus in downtown Calgary.

It happened just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Centre Street and 9th Avenue S.E., in front of the Calgary Tower.

EMS say the victim, a 70-year-old man, was transported to the Foothills Hospital in critical, life-threatening condition.

According to police, the man was on his way home from working a night shift in downtown Calgary when he was struck.

“Witnesses have told us he crossed 9th Avenue from south to north against the pedestrian light, meaning that the bus had a green light,” explains Sgt. Joerg Gottschling.

The bus was unable to stop in time, and hit the man.

“He was wearing all dark clothing, and it is that time of year again where we’re looking at diminished daylight in both morning and afternoon commutes,” added Gottschling. “So pedestrians need to be aware that they’re harder to spot.”

“Motorists need to be aware that it’s going to take them that much longer to actually identify a problem in the roadway, be it a pedestrian or whatever else it may be.”

There was only one passenger aboard the bus, which was an Intercity Express Service bus between Calgary and Airdrie.

Police closed 9th Avenue between 1st Street S.E. and 1 Street S.W. as they investigated.
