The victim has been identified as 83-year-old Julie Gillespie. She was at the Royal Canadian Legion in Kelowna taking part in a meat draw, and had stayed later to socialize with friends.

“She used to run the kitchen for us, she’s been on the council,” says Christine Nelson, a member of the Legion in Kelowna. “She’s done a great many things for this legion and she will be dearly missed very missed.”

At the time of her death, police would only say that Gillespie died of serious and extensive injuries. On Monday morning, police revealed she’d been struck by a vehicle and that the driver who apparently struck her is a 71-year-old woman.
