TORONTO — Politicians in Poland reportedly couldn’t bear to have Winnie the Pooh as a playground mascot because of his lack of pants.
The popular cartoon character was proposed at a council meeting in Tuszyn, according to the Croatian Times, but quickly criticized.
“The problem with that bear is it doesn’t have a complete wardrobe,” said councillor Ryszard Cichy.
“It is half naked which is wholly inappropriate for children.”
Another councillor suggested Pooh doesn’t wear pants “because it doesn’t have a sex. It’s a hermaphrodite.”
Councillor Hanna Jachimska reportedly blamed Pooh’s lack of visible genitals on author A.A. Milne, who she claimed “had a problem with his identity.”
Winnie the Pooh was created in 1924 by Milne, who was inspired by a Canadian black bear at the London Zoo that was named Winnie by its Winnipeg-born owner Harry Colebourn.
