Vancouver police got more than they bargained for after stopping a cyclist for a minor offence last night.

The 31-year-old male was riding his bike on the sidewalk of West Broadway near Oak Street last night at 9 p.m. when police stopped him. After a brief conversation and pat-down search, police found a machete concealed in his pants. The machete, police said, was almost two feet in length.

VPD Cst. Brian Montague said “this is another example that shows how police never know who they may be dealing with, and what dangers may be waiting for them.”

It was later found that the male cyclist was on probation for assault; which included a condition not to carry weapons.

Police have recommended charges of possession of a dangerous weapons and breach of his probation order.
