TORONTO – Environment Canada says much of southern Ontario should expect a light dusting of snow Wednesday night.

A special weather statement says five centimetres of snowfall is expected as a fairly fast-moving disturbance centred just west of the Great Lakes heads northeast.

Areas near the lakes can expect a bit more of the white stuff “due to enhancement off the open water.”

Scores of flights were delayed or cancelled outright as Pearson International Airport was powdered with snow.

The snow will taper off as it moves into eastern Ontario by tonight — providing some relief after snow squalls in many areas Tuesday that snarled traffic and closed several roads and highways.

Provincial police reported numerous collisions on the highways and are reminding motorists to take caution, reminding them that “‘driver error’ not ‘the weather’ is the cause of most road incidents.”

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CP24 that at one point Wednesday evening, they were dealing with 67 accident calls at once on highways it patrols in the Toronto area.

He said throughout the day, the OPP was called to more than 450 collisions that resulted in mostly property damage and only minor injuries.

‘‘People need to understand that just because it may not be snowing … that doesn‘t mean that you can pick up your speed. It is still very treacherous, very slippery,‘‘ Schmidt said.
