Suspect in RCMP hit and run located, charged

REGINA – RCMP have made an arrest in connection with a hit and run collision last month that sent an RCMP officer to hospital with serious injuries.

30-year-old Blake Wahl was arrested at his home in the R.M. of Pense on Tuesday and was charged with one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

On October 19 42-year-old Cst. Keith Bennett was struck by an SUV as it fled the scene of a disturbance call in the R.M. of Sherwood. A man who had been arrested at the scene was also hit, though his injuries were less severe.

Later that same day the suspect vehicle was seized by investigators, though the search for a suspect continued. RCMP now say that the seized vehicle was found on Wahl’s property, that he is not the registered owner of the vehicle, and that the vehicle was not stolen at the time of the collision.

Upwards of 50 interviews were conducted as part of the investigation, and further charges could be laid after consultation with the Crown.

Wahl has since been released from custody and is set to appear in court early in the new year.

According to Cst. Bennett’s family, “while he has come a long way in the month since the incident, he has a long road to a full recovery.”
