TORONTO — Comedian Jim Gaffigan is willing to risk simultaneously endearing himself to medical professionals and outraging connoisseurs of a certain Quebec dish.

“Can I just say something about poutine? It seems almost irresponsible,” Gaffigan said during an interview that aired Tuesday on Global’s The Morning Show.

“It’s like someone’s trying to make French fries more unhealthy. They’re like, ‘Alright, what if we add cheese and gravy and cigarette butts?'”

Gaffigan added: “I love it but the last time I ate poutine, I actually hurt my heart. My heart said, ‘Are you mad at me?'”

The 48-year-old comic and actor is on the road promoting his new book Food: A Love Story. In it, he shares his thoughts on edibles from bacon to pretzel bread.

But don’t call Gaffigan a foodie.

“I’m an eatie. I’m not that bored with regular food. I don’t need cranberry sauce on a steak. Just give me a steak,” he explained. “I don’t want to go on some adventure. I want the closest best hamburger.”

Gaffigan is also not interested in preparing his own food at home.

“People are always like, ‘You love food, you should cook,'” he said. “I like to sleep but I’m not going to make a bed either.”

Gaffigan says fruits and vegetables are “garbage” and you won’t catch him eating kale.

“I’m convinced they could find out kale cures cancer and I would still just do the chemo,” he said.

Donuts, though, are “a blessing from God.”

Gaffigan said he finds the stereotype of donuts being popular with police officers a little odd. “Because you know who else loves donuts? Absolutely everyone.”

The book is a follow-up to his bestselling memoir, Dad is Fat.

“In the literary world that I exist in,” said Gaffigan, taking off his glasses. “I’m kind of the Margaret Atwood of America. She inspired me.

“She likes me,” he continued, before correcting himself.

“She has no idea who I am.”
