WINNIPEG – Manitoba’s New Democratic Party has chosen a six-member committee to lay out ground rules for a leadership race that could topple Premier Greg Selinger.

The committee will work toward a fair and democratic process for the leadership contest that is to take place in March at the NDP’s annual convention, party president Ellen Olfert said.

The committee members are Olfert, Kevin Rebeck, president of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, three members of the party executive and a former party secretary.

Selinger has faced an open revolt from some senior caucus and party members, but has said he will stay on and has suggested his opponents can run against him.

He has pointed to a little-used section of the NDP’s constitution, which says the party leader can be challenged by opponents at any annual convention.

The committee is expected to decide how long a leadership race will last, and may weigh in on whether Selinger should temporarily step down as premier during the contest.
