TORONTO – Police have charged a 36-year-old man following an explosion inside a condo unit in Liberty Village Monday night.

Andre Hagen has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking a narcotic. The Ontario Fire Marshal is leading the investigation.

Police suspect the explosion was caused by a drug lab but have not confirmed if that’s the case.

Police spokesperson Const. David Hopkinson said a “clandestine drug lab” may have been in the condo unit but did not know what kind of drugs might have been involved.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. inside a sixth-floor condo building unit located on East Liberty Street.

One man in his 30s was taken to hospital for minor burns to his hands and face.

Firefighters say there were no flames in the blast, which appears to have been caused by what they termed “pressure build up.”

Windows and doors were blown out by the explosion and police say the blast sent three elevators across from the unit crashing down to the main floor.
