EDMONTON –Guests at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel were forced from their rooms early Tuesday morning when an electrical fire broke out in the parkade under the building.

Fire crews were called just after 1 a.m. to the hotel, which is perched at the top of Bellamy Hill Road, overlooking the North Saskatchewan River valley.

Firefighters found an electrical short in a storage area.

“At the bottom of the parkade there’s a maintenance shop, so there was windows and materials that they were using to renovate parts of the hotel,” said District Chief Marc Zubick, Edmonton Fire Rescue.

The fire was put out a few hours later, leaving behind several feet of water.

“We need to drain the water so we can get in there and have some people from EPCOR and the building maintenance, ensure that in fact, the power has been turned off,” said Chief Zubick.

While it took several hours to put the fire out, a second alarm was not called because the flames were a safe distance away from the hotel. Guests who had been brought to the lobby didn’t have to leave the building, and were eventually allowed to return to their rooms.

The fire remains under investigation.
