A Calgary driver is wondering why ‘motorcycle only’ parking zones remain in effect downtown even though there are few bikes on the road now that winter has arrived.
The six zones downtown are supposed to be available for general parking by the end of October, but drivers are still getting tickets.
Kerry Decoux received a $36 ticket after paying for an hour of parking in one of the zones. He had assumed with all the snow and ice the motorcycle –only zone was no longer in effect.
“I mean, I don’t begrudge them doing their job, that’s exactly what they do,” said Decrox. “But I don’t think the sign should be up at this time of the year when it’s minus 17.”
A spokesperson for the city roads department said crews changing the signs are behind schedule and the motorcycle-only signs will be down by the end of the week.
The Calgary Parking Authority told Global News it can’t cancel Decoux’s ticket for legal reasons.
“We can only cancel tickets if there’s an actual error in the ticket itself,” explained the CPA’s Wes Hogman. “So given that the signs were actually posted there, it’s the obligation of the motorist to obey the signs. Our officers have the responsibility to enforce whats there on the street and the motorist has the responsibility to park accordingly.”
However, the city said it will see what it can do and will discuss the issue with the Parking Authority.
