Multiple internments of human remains at Kelowna cemetery

KELOWNA – It’s not often a cemetery internment involves more than one set of human remains. But that’s what will happen soon in Kelowna.

There are 17 urns of cremated remains at First Memorial Funeral Services that have not been claimed by family or friends. Some have been in storage for about 30 years.

First Memorial general manager, Mark Revie, says there are several reasons why remains are left at funeral homes.

“The first one is they think another family member has picked them up. Secondly, we often wait in the winter for celebrations of life in the spring, and for whatever reason, it just doesn’t happen. And thirdly, it’s just a hard thing to do for some people.”

The unclaimed cremated remains will be interned in a mausoleum crypt at a Kelowna cemetery on December 19th. They can be retrieved if family eventually comes forward.
